What is a Nylon 3D Printing Filament?

Nylon, also called polyamide, is one of the most widely used manufacturing materials in the world. It owes its popularity in 3D printing to its usage in just about every consumer product. You can find nylon in the composition of moving and industrial parts, medical tools, and even in furniture.

In 3D applications, nylon performs well in several structural properties, such as durability, finish quality, flexibility, and tensile strength. It is also a hygroscopic material (able to absorb liquids/moisture). Nylon 3D prints can absorb liquid dyes, allowing for more customization options, but using moist nylon filament will most likely end up in a failed print.

Where can you use Nylon 3D Printing Filament:

Owing to its high tensile strength, nylon 3D printing filaments can be made into plastic gears, nuts, bolts and screws, and cable ties. Some furniture manufacturers also use nylon to create a sturdy frame.

Using it as a Print Material:

Because of its hygroscopic characteristic, it’s essential to dry a nylon printer filament of any moisture. Nylon also needs a high print and bedplate temperature. The optimum heat for printing hovers about 245°C and 280°C, while the bed temperature must be in the 110°C to 120°C range. We recommend PEI film in making nylon prints.

The biggest difference, however, is in the hot end of the 3D printing machine. The hot end is where the filament travels through to the melt zone and nozzle. Most printers come with a PEEK or PTFE, which can only stand up to 240°C. Exceed the limit, and your hot end will start emitting noxious fumes and blacken your print. It is advisable to all-metal hot ends, such as the E3D-V6, that can withstand higher temperatures without melting.
